How can we help?

National Apprenticeship Week November 14-20

National Apprenticeship Week is a nationwide celebration where industry, labor, equity, workforce, education, and government leaders host events to showcase the successes and value of Registered Apprenticeship for re-building our economy, advancing racial and gender equity, and supporting underserved communities. NAW is an opportunity to highlight how Registered Apprenticeship, a proven and industry-driven training model, provides a critical talent pipeline that can help to address some of our nation’s pressing workforce challenges such as rebuilding our country’s infrastructure, addressing critical supply chain demands, supporting a clean energy workforce, modernizing our cybersecurity response, and responding to care economy issues.

To promote greater awareness of Apprenticeship in the plumbing and piping industry the MCAI has partnered with Built to Succeed – Indiana Careers in Construction. This group promotes apprenticeship in a number of union construction trades. They are on the frontlines of the fight to get information about the construction trades to high school age kids, and even those in grade school. Side note: They are looking for a Community Outreach Coordinator – they will make presentations to schools, work on social media programming, and work to create/foster partnerships with state and regional workforce development leaders. If you know anyone who may be interested have them call the MCAI office.

440 Training Director John Kurek noted in this month’s newsletter that they have participated in many events with ICCA, including in Delaware and Wayne counties. John also participated with ICCA at the Junior Achievement Job Spark at the State Fairgrounds. Over 11,000 8th grade students and over 300 educators from 72 schools attended the two-day event.

In order to meet the coming demands on the mechanical industry many more apprentices will be needed. Training centers will have to adapt how they operate by taking steps such as moving, at least in part, to day school. In order to get more apprentices we as an industry must do a better job of telling our story – and it’s a damn good story.  https://www.builttosucceed.org/plumbers-pipefitters

During National Apprenticeship Week 2022, the U.S. Department of Labor will highlight the following key themes:
Monday, Nov. 14: Registered Apprenticeship in New and Emerging Industries
Tuesday, Nov. 15: Pre-Apprenticeship and Youth Apprenticeship
Wednesday, Nov. 16: Expanding Registered Apprenticeship to Underserved Populations
Thursday, Nov. 17: Women in Apprenticeship
Friday, Nov. 18: Public Service Apprenticeship and Veterans in Apprenticeship

Field Leaders Training a big hit!

Thanks to MCAA, Greg Fuller, Chris Haslinger of the UA and Mark Rogers for bringing the Field Leaders seminar to Indianapolis. Close to 150 foremen and project managers from around the country (although about half were from Indiana) participated.

Chris gave some details in his presentation on the scope of work nationwide that the UA will be involved in during the next few years – 67 billion in electric vehicle and battery plants, 294 billion in energy infrastructure projects, 358 billion in the semi-conductor industry, and 172 billion in plumbing and HVAC projects, 25 billion in pipeline and gas distribution projects, 3 billion in fire protection, and NONE of these include projects where the estimated work is under 700 million. That’s 919 billion in new work on the horizon! Chris also reported that the UA now has over 360,000 members, larger than they’ve ever been. This valuable training is one of the many benefits of membership in MCAI and MCAA!

Independent Project Analysis Study Shows That Union Labor Adds Value to Construction Projects.

A new report by Independent Project Analysis (IPA), an independent international construction project engineering and research firm, shows that union mechanical contractors were 15% more productive than non-union contractors, with a more than 40%reduction in risks of cost and schedule overruns. It further reveals that the total cost of union projects was 4% less than non-union projects. The report is based on an analysis of1,550 capital projects on industrial facilities across the United States over the past 20 years.
